Dorcas Room Volunteers Dorcas Room Visiters

Dorcas was a woman in New Testament times who was well-known for her kindness and charitable acts (Acts 9.36-43).

Named for this early Christian disciple and seeking to follow her example, the Dorcas Room is a clothing room which is open on Monday mornings from 9:00-11:30 AM, August–May for those in the community who are in need.

The Dorcas Room dates back to the early part of 1996, when Loraine Shipley and various other volunteers first began the work. In 1997, George and Mildred Williams took over the program, and were later joined by Ed and Vel Spurlock, who helped until January of 2003. At that point, Lelah Scroggins and Joann Mahaffey began to oversee the program at the request of the elders, and continue to do so today along with the help of several volunteers.

Since its beginning, the Dorcas Room volunteers have given away over 51,000 articles of clothing on hangers and even more folded items. Over the years, thousands of visitors have been served, and over 540 individuals were helped in 2009 alone.
